Migraines

Headaches and especially migraines are not normal! There can be many underlying factors as to why you may be getting headaches. A majority of headaches are due to not enough oxygen to the brain. When the brain needs more oxygen, arteries and other small blood vessels dilate or expand to allow more blood flow. This process is great at bringing the brain its desired effect (more oxygen). However, there is not a lot of room in your head for these blood vessels to expand, and when they do they create a massive amount of pressure. This pressure is what causes the pounding throbbing headaches.

Many times patients report relief from symptoms when taking medications that have a vasoconstriction effect. Or in other words these meds decrease the size of the blood vessels and thus relief the pressure inside the skull. The problem with taking medications, whether over the counter or prescription is that they ultimately do not allow the brain to get the oxygen it needs to function efficiently. The side affects may not be as painful as a headache but they can be just as serious.
